4-Wheeling-Big Bend

We rented a jeep for the day. John enjoyed driving it as much as we all enjoyed the sites we could visit because we had it. The park is isolated. There is no cell phone service anywhere within the park. People who live and work there all have satelite phone service. The Desert is an unforgiving place to be if you make a mistake. We carried lots of water, food, extra clothing and had proper shoes and supplies....and still, when you're 50 miles from the next nearest rode and you only see 2 other cars all day....well, you're just thankful you didn't make any mistakes...

We visited an abandoned mine. Cinnabar (mercury) was mined in this area for many years. And many people died young from mercury poisoning.

Big Bend National Park is the only National Park that has a complete mountain range within the park boundries. The Chisos Mountains are incredible. Surrounding the mountains is the Chihuahuan Desert. The lodge and cabins are located in the middle of the mountains. The nearest towns are quite a distance from...well anywhere.
